Dex is an original production for Windows PC created by the independent Czech studio Dreadlocks, combining elements of an action game, RPG and a classic side-scrolling platformer in the style of Flashback. The game, set in a cyberpunk style, draws inspiration from cult titles known from arcades and the work of William Gibson, the author of the classic science fiction novel Neuromancer. Plot
The plot of Dex takes us into the future, to a place called Harbor Prime, where districts full of luxurious skyscrapers contrast with the run-down and squalid settlements of the poor. In such a world, we will have to face a mysterious artificial intelligence that was born in the network and grew in strength, drawing knowledge from billions of its users and available applications and databases. Considering itself the last link in the chain of evolution, the sinister cybernetic force wants to break free from humanity's control and make the final transformation, and our task is to prevent it from doing so.
Mechanics The game's action takes place in a non-linear manner, leaving players the opportunity to choose the path of development and the way in which we want to complete subsequent missions. Depending on the individual style, we can eliminate the obstacles we encounter with weapons, skills or special devices. Another interesting feature is the introduction of the possibility of hand-to-hand combat, reminiscent of classic beat'em up games. In addition to the main plot, in Dex we will also come across a number of side quests. However, they are not just an unnecessary addition, but are closely related to the story told, exerting a specific influence on the further development of events. The original idea of the creators is the possibility of playing on two interconnected planes: in the real world and in cyberspace. By taking control of your avatar, you can hack computers or deactivate defense systems, and the effects of these actions will be immediately visible in the surrounding reality.
Technical issues The game's two-dimensional, hand-drawn graphics are a combination of the design typical of the aforementioned Flashback with the style and atmosphere of productions such as Shadowrun Returns. In the audio layer, you will hear Karel Antonin's soundtrack, which is a mix of film and electronic music. Actors were also invited to collaborate, reading all the dialogue lines in the game. Dex on the Windows PC platform was created on the popular Unity 3D engine, which resulted in, among other things, simultaneous release of the game for Windows, Linux, MacOS and the Ouya console.
